There is a wonderful research paper which I have come across which describes how cortical areas in the human brain is helpful in studying the consciousness levels in humans.

The extension of Penrose- Hameroff Orch - OR theory has been extended to n-dimensional quantum states gives a hope to researchers for even higher mathematical abstraction in developing suitable models to study the human consciousness.
